Ukraine: Pro-Russian separatists free a Swedish observer 'on medical grounds'
'There was one hostage freed yestersay: a Swedish observer, was escorted 'for health reason' into a bus at about 5 PM (local time) to observers part from the negotiating team. As for those being held in Sloviansk, the self proclaimed mayor there seems to be using these observers as bargaining chips. He wants what he calls a prisoner exchange, he considers that his city is in a state of war, and considers the hostage observers as prisoners of war, and he is not going to release them until his conditions are met.'
Report from Douglas Herbert, our correspondent in Donetsk, Ukraine.

EU, ASEAN differ in extent of condemning Russia's actions in Ukraine: Observer
When it comes to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Europe would like to have the harshest possible words on a communique. But while countries are fine with loose statements of condemnation, not everyone is willing to impose sanctions the way the Europeans have. The New Phase Of The War In Ukraine
Who is actually winning the war in Ukraine has changed almost weekly. Just five months ago, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine looked very different. Putin launched a three-prong nation-wide assault, raining down cruise missiles, surrounding the capital and taking small villages and towns. But very quickly, Ukrainian forces held their defense lines and forced the Russians, who had come unprepared for a long fight, to pull back. Now, the war is a battle of positions, with the Ukrainian forces on the defensive in the Donbas region, trying to slow the Russian advance down. VICE News travels to the Kharkiv and Donbas regions of Eastern Ukraine to gain a clearer understanding of an ever-changing and volatile frontline in one of the world’s most brutal ongoing conflicts.

'Unforgettable': OSCE observer describes release from captivity in Ukraine
In Ukraine the remaining seven European military observers held by pro-Russian separatists in Slovyansk have been freed, along with five Ukrainians.
"We can now confirm the release of the military observers," said a spokeswoman for the OSCE, under whose auspices the military verification officers led by German defence ministry staff were in the country, at Ukraine's request.
The news was first announced by Russia's envoy to the town. Vladimir Lukin said all those on his list had been freed.

ANCYL's 'Orwellian' election observer trip to Ukraine questioned
Members of the ANC Youth League are currently acting as "election observers" in occupied territories in Ukraine where referendums were held over five days. Voting took place to decide whether residents of the four regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia wanted to be incorporated into Russia. It's a move widely viewed as a pretext to the full annexation of that area by Russia. BizNews spoke to Steven Gruzd, head of the Russia/Africa programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs for his take on the truly bizarre involvement of ANCYL members in what many around the world consider a "sham".

It seems that increasingly these days, the United States is letting Ukraine fight, valiantly, but is it with one hand tied behind its back?
The US and its allies have given the Ukrainians artillery systems, some of them quite advanced, but withheld those with the longest range or, as arms experts have suggested, the greatest sophistication.
In an address to Congress on Wednesday, Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska asked US lawmakers to send air defense systems to her country "in order for rockets not to kill children in their strollers."
Still, Ukrainian officials have expressed their public gratitude for weapons delivered so far. Ukranian President Voldymyr Zelensky, in his daily video message Monday, observed that his armed forces are now "able to inflict significant logistical losses on the occupiers."
Military observers tell me that Zelensky and his senior generals have expressed their delight in the new systems that are appearing, hoping that their words will encourage a greater willingness of the West to release even more advanced systems that could turn the tide of battle by leaps and bounds.
There is an electronic war that cries out to be fought -- drones that need to be jammed or flown to precise targets, long-range artillery with GPS targeting, enemy chatter that needs to be plucked from the skies. Some of these capabilities are increasing as the West gradually introduces new systems to the battlefield and trains Ukrainians to operate them.
